U14s - Barnsley Vs Yarnbury

Barnsley 0 v Yarnbury 61

Having played a competitive fixture within the last 24hrs and by the quality of the opposition faced, Sunday’s game against the visitors from Leeds was always likely to be an uphill struggle; and so it proved.

In the same vain as the game against Castleford, Barnsley were more than a match for their opponents in the set piece and when the ball was retained by the forwards. Unfortunately for Barnsley, the moment their opponents took control of the ball they were quick to run it and through a mixture of good handling, support and offloading in the contact area they quickly cantered into 29 v 0 lead by half time. That’s not to say that the Barnsley backs were AWOL, they were many occasions that the ferocity of the Barnsley defence shook the visitors to their core (take a bow Paul Kelly for your perseverance), but the extra man always seemed to magically appear with a clear run to the try line.

Barnsley were unlucky; on many occasions the forwards would gain territory that would see them camped on the Yarnbury try line, only to be denied by desperate and resolute defence.

The second half brought more of the same as the visitors ran in a further 6 tries to give a score line of 61 v 0 at the final whistle.

Whilst the final score line was disappointing and no doubt aided by fatigue and injuries from the previous day, Barnsley should take some consolation that they were beaten by a quality team who worked hard for and in support of each other.

Man of the match awards for the weekend went to Fred Butcher (Forwards) and Aaron Westmoreland (Backs).
