Barnsley U15’s enjoyed an outing to the east coast at Bridlington
in the first round of the Yorkshire Cup, and came away with a 49-0 victory.
It was an exceptional performance with seven tries being scored and
every one being converted.
Captain Dominic Barrow led from the front as usual and scored two typical
tries within the first ten minutes. Both were made by the second row
picking up from the base of rucks and forcing his way over the opposition
line.
The interpassing and support play was devastating at times and following
a rumbling drive by Sam Moss, the mobile prop off-loaded to flanker
Max Brook who scored a well worked try. Dominic Barrow added his third
conversion of the day.
The fourth try saw hooker Matthew Potts being stopped short just short
of the line, but he managed to pass inside to Sam Moss who stretched
full length to plant the ball over the line.
The backs then got in on the act with Joe Maycroft squeezing over in
the corner after the ball was moved quickly down the line. The forwards
then used some aggressive rucking to force their way in to the Bridlington
half. The ball was then moved along the line to Joe Maycroft who showed
excellent pace to round the opposition defence for his second try.
The final score came when Tom Henighan received the ball 20 metres out
and he managed to thread his way through the Bridlington tacklers to
finish off an excellent cup-tie. Liam Roebuck added the conversion.
The referee could have awarded the man of the match to any one of the
Barnsley side after such a comprehensive team performance, but he chose
prop Sam Moss for his all round contribution, support play and versatility
as he metamorphosised in to a flying winger in the second half !
