U15s
- Barnsley Vs Chesterfield
CHESTERFIELD U15`s 10 V BARNSLEY U15’s
24
Barnsley U15’s made the short trip down the M1 to Chesterfield
and produced another superb defensive performance to beat their Derbyshire
rivals by 24 points to 10.
It was a bleak, windswept day which didn’t lend itself to expansive
rugby, but the Shaw Lane side looked to move the ball at every opportunity,
and it was the backs once again who were first to cross the opposition
line.
The ball was shipped from the centres to in-form Greg Colbridge, who
showed neat footwork to round the Chesterfield winger and score wide
out.
Next on the score sheet was fly half Josh Lewis who picked the ball
up and raced clear of the defence, only to be stopped by the last man
illegally. Unfortunately the referee had no option but to award a penalty
try, and Josh duly added the conversion.
Chesterfield then came back into the game, and following a series of
bemusing penalty decisions scored out wide.
The half ended with Greg Colbridge scooping the ball up on the half
way line and sprinting past the entire Chesterfield side to score under
the posts. Josh Lewis added the conversion.
The second half started with the referee giving a lecture to a ‘gobby
git’ in the crowd who had protested over a ‘hoy tarckle’
whatever that may be. I thought it was a town near Bristol but what
do I know.
However – back to the rugby. Barnsley defended superbly again
and out-rucked the opposition at every opportunity, but were forced
back on their own line after another series of penalties. Man of the
match Kane Feek tried in vane to stop a five man ‘flying wedge’
and Chesterfield reduced the deficit to 19 – 10.
Barnsley had the final word with another outstanding move by the backs.
The ball was spread to flying winger Joe Maycroft who glided in at the
corner to kill the game off at 24 – 10.
It was another inspired performance by the Shaw Lane side who have just
got better and better throughout the season, and they can now look forward
to taking on a new challenge as they head to North Wales on their Easter
tour.
