BARNSLEY U15’S 45 DRIFFIELD U15’S
13
Barnsley U15’s made the long journey across to Driffield and recorded
a fine 45 – 13 win to round off an excellent season.
First on the score sheet after just two minutes was fly half Josh Lewis.
He received the ball from a set scrum, dummied his opposite number and
crossed under the posts. He also added the conversion.
Driffield then put together a series of driving runs and were awarded
a penalty in midfield which they kicked successfully. This fired up
the Barnsley side who had not conceded appoint in the last two matches.
They took a quick penalty and fed Blake Marsland Gray who off loaded
superbly to Greg Colbridge. The flying winger cut back inside and crossed
for a well worked try. Greg also added the conversion.
Following excellent work by Aidan Tallant and Jamie Todd, Barnsley forced
their way in to the Driffield half. The ball was moved quickly to the
right and Greg Cranston came in to the line and managed to squeeze over
in the corner. Greg Colbridge added the conversion.
Driffield then showed good hands in the backs and following a couple
of missed tackles scored a neat try on the wing. However not to be outdone
the Barnsley try machine that is Greg Colbridge picked the ball up 5
metres inside the Driffield half and sprinted past the entire defence
to score under the posts. He also added the conversion.
Driffield again fought their way back, and drove the ball in to the
Barnsley 22. They were awarded a penalty, took it quickly and scored
in the corner. The impressive Barnsley backs then struck with a typical
Joe Maycroft effort. He received the ball at pace and gassed it down
the wing, rounded the full back and planted the ball for an excellent
score. Life is like a box of chocolates after all !
The forwards then set up a series of rucks and drove up to the Driffield
10 metre line. From here Josh Lewis picked the ball up, dipped his shoulder
and ghosted in from 40 metres.
It was the Shaw Lane front row that had the last word with Jamie Todd
hammering towards the line and feeding Matthew Potts who was stopped
just short. Fellow member of the ‘one two three’ club Sam
Moss ripped the ball out, and there is just no stopping him over that
distance. It put a smile on his granddad’s face, even though it
cost him another fiver !
Special mention must go to Sam Wollerton who broke his ankle in training
but still traveled with the squad. We wish him a speedy recovery and
look forward to seeing him back on his feet soon.
Man of the match award was jointly awarded to the hardworking pair of
Jamie Todd and Aidan Tallant or `Ayron` as the coach thinks he’s
called. It was a fitting finale to an excellent season that has seen
players develop beyond all expectations, and left everyone looking forward
to 2008/09.
