U15s
- Malton and Norton Vs Barnsley
East Retford U15’s 0 - Barnsley U15’s
59
Barnsley U15’s travelled to East Retford on Remembrance Sunday,
and after observing a minutes silence at 11 o’clock the Shaw Lane
side appropriately notched up 11 tries on the 11th day of the 11th month
to record a 59 – 0 victory.
It was another display of running rugby with exceptional ball handling
being demonstrated by the whole side.
Fly half Josh Lewis was first on the score sheet after he picked the
ball up from a scrum. He ran straight over the Retford winger to score
in the corner.
This was quickly followed by a typical Sam Moss try. The hooker used
his upper body strength to good effect and powered over from short range.
He makes the close range efforts look simple and is very difficult to
stop when he sniffs the line.
Tom Henighan once again showed great pace for the third try of the day.
The back row forward received the ball wide out and cut inside at full
tilt to outrun the Retford defence. Josh Lewis added the conversion.
At this point in the match the Barnsley side totally dominated possession
and after they were awarded a penalty the ball was moved quickly along
the back line for winger Joe Maycroft to score the first of his three
tries. Josh Lewis again added the extra two points.
After the break the Shaw Lane side continued to move the ball wide at
every opportunity, and after scrum half Greg Cranston picked the ball
up at the base of a scrum he fed centre Adam Parr who powered his way
over.
Blake Marsland-Gray then tore through the Retford defence and with three
supporting players outside him chose to cut inside. It looked as if
he would be stopped short, but he used a hand off to good effect and
squeezed over.
Possibly the best try of the match came from a lovely handling move
by the backs. The ball was moved from scrum half all the way through
to winger Joe Maycroft who used his pace to cross wide out.
Liam Roebuck was ‘ten bob’ better off after scoring the
side’s eighth try. His dad’s generous bonus payments have
inspired the centre in the last few games, and he used his long legs
to good effect by spinning out of two tackles to crash over the Retford
line.
Not to be outdone Josh Lewis scored twice in quick succession to complete
his hat trick. The first was a powerful effort with the fly half jinking
his way past three would-be tacklers and the second saw him simply out-pacing
the Retford winger to go over in the corner
The last word went to Joe Maycroft who for the second week running completed
a thrilling hat trick. He collected the ball following a series of rucks
and used a superb line of running to cross out wide.
Man of the match as chosen by the referee was Tom Henighan for his ever-present
support play throughout the match.
Special mention must also go to Greg Colbridge
who showed excellent handling skills in his first game for the club.
