U15s
- Barnsley Vs Hull Ionians
YORKSHIRE CUP 3rd ROUND
Barnsley U15’s 0 - Hull Ionians U15’s 20
Barnsley U15’s faced Hull Ionians in the 3rd round of the Yorkshire
Cup, and despite a superb display of committed defensive rugby they
were beaten by 20 points to 0.
The Shaw Lane side came roaring out of the starting blocks following
an intense team talk, and were applying pressure to the East Yorkshire
side through the forwards in the opening quarter.
The defence held firm until Ionians picked the ball up from the scrum,
and the scrum half darted down the blind side and squeezed over in the
corner.
This prompted the home side to open up the game a little and the backs
played out of their own 22 at a ferocious pace only for the final pass
to go astray when it looked as if Greg Colbridge was in the clear.
Barnsley held out for the remainder of the half until just before half
time. It was thanks to some brilliant cover tackles from Callan Mellor,
Kane Feek and Dominic Barrow that the Hull side were unable to find
any clean possession but they managed to pinch a ball against the head,
and the back rower chose to head down the blind side. He forced his
way over to make it 10 – 0 at the break.
The second half started at a frenetic pace and again it was some superb
cover tackling that denied the visitors any sort of decent possession.
Man of the match Sam King was outstanding with his fitness about the
park and his commitment in defence was an inspiration to the rest of
the side.
Josh Lewis had another excellent game with the boot and he kept the
Barnsley side going forward with his neat touchline efforts.
The front row deserve credit for their unrelenting drive against a powerful
pack with Mossy, Pottsy and Sam Wollerton all having great games.
The first try of the second half came from a quick tap penalty which
caught everyone by surprise, and Ionians managed to slice through the
Barnsley back line before anyone could react.
The final try of the game saw the opposition centre pick a fine line
of running, and he managed to carve his way through the defenders to
make the final score 20 – 0.
It was an entertaining game against a side who have lifted the trophy
on more than one occasion, and the whole of the Barnsley side should
take pride in their performance. Everyone from full back to prop played
their part and we wish Ionians well in the next round.
