U15s - Barnsley Vs Roundhegians

BARNSLEY U15’S 36 ROUNDHEGIANS UNDER 15’S 0

Barnsley U15’s played host to Leeds side Roundhegians in an end of the season encounter, and played superbly throughout to record a 36 – 0 victory.

The game was interrupted as early as the third minute with a serious wrist injury to one of the Roundhegian players. Everyone at Shaw Lane wishes him a speedy recovery and a quick return to playing rugby.

The delay in play did nothing to dampen either side’s enthusiasm and following some excellent work by the front row of Sam Wollerton, Pottsy and Sam Moss the ball found its way to Joe Maycroft on the wing. He sprinted fully 50 metres past the Roundhegian defenders to score in the corner.

The Shaw Lane outfit dominated the line outs through some determined jumping by Kane Feek and Aidan Tallant, and eventually the constant pressure being applied brought a further score.

Following a great catch by Sam Wollerton and impressive rucking by Jordan Fletcher the ball was fed to fly half Josh Lewis who produced two hand-offs and great acceleration to out-run the defence and score out wide.

Next it was the turn of flying number seven Max Brook to get on the score sheet. He pounced on a loose ball at a ruck and darted down the blind side to force his way over with 2 defenders hanging off him.

Adam Parr, despite nursing a leg injury, then showed great skill with a jinking run. He timed his pass superbly to winger Greg Colbridge who left the Roundhegians full back for dead. Greg also converted his own try.

The final effort of the half came following some excellent work by the forwards. A great driving maul and close passing from the ever-improving trio of Jamie Todd, Joe Moorhouse and Joe Green saw the home side gaining a five metre scrum. Number eight Blake Marsland Gray made no mistake with the pick up, and drove over for the try. Greg Colbridge added the extra points to make it 29 – 0 at half time.

In the second half Roundhegians played with determination, and were unlucky on several occasions not to get close to the Barnsley line.

However, it was constant harrying and great scrum half work from Natt Tuttiett and Callan Mellor that provided Barnsley with ample ball and a stable attacking platform.

One certain try was saved by Liam Roebuck who pulled off a decisive ‘man and ball’ tackle which epitomised the determination of the Shaw Lane outfit.

Greg Cranston then set off on one of his typical mazey runs, and the ball found its way in to the Roundhegians 22 metre area. The quick thinking Greg Cranston hacked the ball through, picked up superbly and dove over the line to score. Josh Lewis added the conversion.

It was arguably Barnsley’s most complete performance of the season, with every player giving one hundred per cent commitment throughout.

Candidates for man of the match were numerous. Joe Green had by far his best game in a Barnsley shirt so far – some quality clearing out and impressive ball handling. Luke Denton had a solid game on the wing putting in some great cover tackles, and embarking on exciting runs.

The referee (once his hangover had cleared) awarded it to the irrepressible Sam Moss who out-rucked and out-mauled everyone on the field in yet another fine display.
