vs West Park Leeds
YORKSHIRE CUP 2nd ROUND
Barnsley U15’s 74 v West Park Leeds U15’s 5
Barnsley U15’s finally played their 2nd round Yorkshire Cup tie
with West Park Leeds, after several previous attempts fell victim to
the weather.
The Shaw Lane side was in devastating form despite a six week break
and came out on top by 74 points to 5.
They signaled their intent straight from the kick off and scored the
first of twelve tries in the opening minute. A neat interpassing move
by the Barnsley back line saw winger Greg Colbridge round the West Park
Leeds defenders to score wide out.
The second score followed almost immediately with fly half Josh Lewis
picking the ball up on the half way line and using his scorching pace
to cut through the pack. He then jinked past the full back to finish
off a fine individual try. Dominic Barrow duly added the conversion.
The Barnsley forwards then took control, and after a series of rucks
the ball found its way to Josh Lewis who kept close to the touch line
and ghosted in for his second score.
The whole pack then showed excellent control to drive towards the opposition
line, and it was flanker Max Brook who managed to squeeze over from
close range. Josh Lewis added the extra points.
Not to be outdone fellow flanker Jordan Fletcher used his power and
pace to evade 3 defenders and he crashed over after a 40 metre run.
Dominic Barrow added the conversion.
The longest run of the day belonged to Joe Maycroft who received the
ball behind his own 22 metre line and scythed his way through the West
Park Leeds players to score after an 80 metre dash.
The cup tie was effectively over at half time with Blake Marsland-Gray
using his trade-mark hand off to run straight over the opposition and
wrap up the game at 41 – 0.
The game continued as a friendly in the second half as the Yorkshire
cup rules dictate that the tie is over once a 40 point margin is reached
and the West Park Leeds side managed a consolation try following a kick
and chase.
This served to further inspire the Barnsley side and Captain Dominic
Barrow caught a ball superbly at a line out and tore through the opposition
pack for thoroughly deserved try. He again added the conversion.
Adam Parr then scooped up the ball 10 metres inside his own half and
used his long stride to glide past the defence and take the score past
50 points. Dominic Barrow converted once more.
The forwards again showed great mobility and handling skills with prop
Blake Marsland-Gray receiving the ball and powering past the back line
to score wide out. Dominic Barrow added the conversion.
Arguably the best try of the game came from Joe Maycroft who side-stepped
and swerved for 70 metres through the entire West Park Leeds side to
score wide out and Dominic Barrow curled in a superb conversion.
Blake Marsland-Gray completed his hat-trick with another battering run
down the right and he hammered his way over for the twelfth try.
It was yet another performance full of commitment and skill from the
whole squad. The man of the match award could have gone to any of a
number of players but the referee chose fly half Josh Lewis who had
another excellent game.
