U15s - Barnsley Vs York

SUNDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2007

Barnsley U15’s 20 V York U15’s 15

Barnsley U15’s had to re-arrange their fixture after Rotherham Titans had a number of players on South Yorkshire duty, and York kindly made the trip over to Shaw Lane.

It turned out to be the closest game of the season so far with the lead changing hands seven times throughout the match before the Barnsley side just edged it 20 – 15.

Both sides were fully committed straight from the kick-off and it was the visitors who scored first with a neat passing move that out-witted the Barnsley defence.

In form Josh Lewis soon wrestled the lead back with one of his customary blind-side runs. He picked the ball up and tore down the left wing and used his pace to round the York winger and full back to score a fine individual try.
Not to be outdone the York winger and centre combined to force their way over and regained the lead at 10 – 5.
Josh Lewis then proved he can step off both feet, as he scored a carbon copy of his first try, except this one was down the right flank. He gave a quick show of the ball, turned on the after-burners, and left the defenders in his wake again.
Barnsley then went in front when Tom Henighan looked to be going sideways rather than forwards, but he used his deceptive speed to bamboozle the York defence. He picked the ball up just inside the opposition 22 and strode on a shallow angle to score superbly in the corner.

Yet again York responded with a try out wide and it set up a thrilling finish to the game as both sides were tied at 15 – 15.

Barnsley saved the best ‘til last as usual, and it was Sam Moss who started the killer move off by pouncing on a ball just inside the York half. He used his strength and pace to rumble to the 22 metre line where he fed Captain and man of the match Kane Feek. The second rower powered his way through the York back line to score in the corner with five minutes to go.

The final phase of the match saw the whole of the home side make tackle after tackle, and they kept York pinned back in their own half. It was a complete team effort from Barnsley, who played with grit and determination throughout, and a great preparation for their forthcoming 2nd round of the Yorkshire Cup.

Barnsley U15’s have now scored exactly 400 points from 12 games and have 3 games left to try and break the magical ‘500 points before Christmas barrier’.
