“DIN” WIN AG’IN
Barnsley started off their season with
a tough one, against the very accomplished and powerful Dinnington team.
In October last year we lost this fixture at home by 5 – 43, and
in the return fixture away in February this year we lost 17 –
0. So for the first time out, with “lifting” in the line
out, the lads were up against it.
Barnsley battled against powerful “Din” driving play right
from the start, which resulted in their opening try after 6 minutes.
0-5
Barnsley responded with an all too brief foray into the Din 22, which
resulted in a missed penalty attempt at goal.
Thereafter Barnsley were well and truly under the cosh.
Only heroic defence kept the visitors at bay.
Barnsley held on until the final moments of the first half when the
Din forwards crashed over, after battering away at the home line. 0
– 10
The second half started as the first half ended with Barnsley defending
as if their lives depended on it, but the line out was going badly and
Din stole one on the home team 5m line to set up a drive for the corner
to score again. 0 –15
Try as they might Barnsley could not get their attacking game together,
and despite having a penalty count heavily in their favour, could not
exploit the positions they were given.
However, the defence remained dogged, so much so, that when Din were
given a penalty, on the edge of the home 22, they kicked for goal. 0
–18
By now the pressure was telling, and some of the forwards, especially,
looked out on their feet, but somehow they kept going.
In the last 5 minutes of the second half, saw a sweeping Din move ending
with a score on the wing. (Probably the only move either team put together
passing the ball through the backs and forwards.) 0 – 23
Barnsley were losing line out ball, they were being turned over in the
loose, and shoved off their own ball in the scrum, but still they refused
to give in. If they had this could have easily exceeded the 43 points
from the last home game with Din.
At least 3 certain tries were held up over the line.
In the last quarter of the game we suddenly started to get some possession,
even winning quick ball from a scrum in the Din half. A kick and chase
ensued which was finished off by Josh Woolhouse in the corner. An unexpected
and pleasant surprise.
5 – 23.
Din were roused for the finale, and were held up over the line again
before the final whistle blew.
Barnsley MOTM – Matthew Tilson.
Today was the day for big tacklers and Matthew didn’t shirk, “punching”
way above his weight.
Mention in dispatches – 2 other lads who in particular put in
the big hits were Jordan Hulme and Rob Mynett.
A final mention to débutante Tom Wilford, who played his first
game of rugby ever. A true “baptism of fire”. He also got
stuck in.
