BARNSLEY DROWN IN THE WHARFE
Wharfedale ultimately ended up comfortably
winning this encounter, but the score doesn’t tell the whole story.
Barnsley made their best start to a game this season and it appeared
to be that the lads were up to the challenge.
However, they were to concede 3 unconverted tries, somewhat unluckily,
to turn round 0 – 15 down at half time. In my opinion this did
not reflect the true nature of the half, as I think we were almost the
equal of the hosts.
The scrum was excellent, and included 2 strikes against the head, the
lineout was a little shaky, but no worse than the hosts.
We had some dynamic play throughout the team, and mounted some dangerous
attacks. Rob Mynett narrowly missed a touch down in a kick and chase
that went over the dead ball line, and also just missed a penalty kick.
Barnsley would have deserved to turn around 10 –15.
I was optimistic that the lads would claw their
way back into the game, but the second half was a different story.
The scrum remained solid, but the line out went to pieces. Despite the
fact that the lads won far more turn overs in open play than the opposition,
we didn’t do much with it, our passing and attacks being too slow
and laboured to cause much of a problem. In contrast the hosts became
stronger as the game progressed, too many of our lads faded, and the
gaps began to appear. Wharfedale ran in a further 4 tries,(3 converted),
launching searing breaks, which cut a swathe through Barnsley’s
desperate defence. The hosts running from deep, their slick passing
and support play was an object lesson to Barnsley who lacked all three
in the second half.
The only saving grace for Barnsley was the commitment in defence, but
you can’t defend all the time and not concede scores. Final score
0 – 41.
This week’s mention in dispatches go to Kieron Holmes, a dynamic
game at number 8, Connor Egan at prop, and Tyler Smith who was prepared
to enthuse his team mates in a lost cause (I’ve never heard him
shout so loud).
The Barnsley man of the match was Brett Moss, who put in some powerful
runs and determined defence, he saved at least one certain try.
